Course Objectives:

The learner will:

á         See how sound can be produced in a variety of ways, creating tone color.

á         Experiment with tone color in a variety of ways and judge their musical effect.        

á         Recognize the many characteristics that contribute to making a melody.

á         Identify the various types of scales used to base melodies on.

á         Identify the names of the lines and spaces in then treble clef.

á         Discover harmony and the beauty of creating it.

á         Recognize texture as the organization of melody and harmony.

á         Judge the effectiveness of different textures by adding to and changing the existing texture.

á         Perceive forming processes and structure form in a variety of pieces.

á         Identify the two basic forming procedures, repetition and contrast.

á         Recognize other types of forms as canon variations, 12 bar blues, call and response.

á         Explore how all of the musical elements play a part of musical form.

á         Identify note values for whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, dotted notes and their rests.

á         Count rhythms using these note values in a variety of meters.

á         Employ movement to demonstrate rhythm concepts.

á         Experience the arts through creating tension.

á         Experience music in different periods of history.

á         Experience various styles of performance.

 

Materials:

Stereo system, piano, a variety of music octavos,  tape recorder, various audio tapes and CDs, pencils, white board & markers, video camera, tapes, TV, VCR, DVD player, DVDS.
